Many substances are removed by municipal water treatment. However, even then it does not mean that our tap water is completely pure. Activated carbon removes harmful chemical components from water by adsorption. This is possible due to the enormous surface varying between 300 and 2000m² per gram which e.g. equals the size of a soccer field per 2 grams. The clue to that surface is a sponge like structure with pores of the size in the nanometer range. The material can be made out of numerous organic or mineral resources; usually hard coal or coconut shell. Activated carbon works very effectively towards non polar solvable substances, such as organic pollutants or micro pollutants. On a molecular level some parts of a substance when close enough to the coal surface will be adsorbed by Van der Waals forces enabling a weak chemical bond. As such when fully loaded activated carbon can be recycled and used again. Activated carbon treatment can be found in a variety of applications and areas and is also one of the most common treatments in the municipal water supply area. In combination with UV disinfection and as a side effect it optimizes the water quality for UV light to be used most effective making it a highly synergistic process combination.
UV light at wave lengths below 290 nm has a strong disinfection effect and kills bacteria, viruses and parasites in just seconds without any harmful side effects or by-products. The physics behind it is that the UV photon energy is being absorbed by DNA/RNA contained in every organism essential for the reproduction and stability of it. During the absorption process the energy of the photon quantum is transferred on a sub atomic level to parts of the DNA/RNA molecular components. This is causing lethal bond breaks and other damages rendering the pathogen completely harmless. The process itself works on a physical level without chemical dosing.
